St. Gilgen

The “picture postcard” village of St. Gilgen has a host of old buildings, many of which are elaborately decorated with traditional frescos. It also boasts a wide range of shops, restaurants, cafes, banks & other facilities, including an internet cafe. In addition, there is a large indoor & outdoor pool & several children’s play areas. Cycles are available for rent & provide access to the well maintained flat cycle tracks around the lake.

The lakeside promenade is one of the docking points for the Wolfgangsee shipping line, from where St Wolfgang & Strobl are easily reached after a short cruise. It is also home to many local water-sports, including waterskiing & motorboat hire. There are many bathing beaches around the lake & swimmers will be pleasantly surprised at the warm temperature of the water (not to mention its drinking water quality).

The village is also home to the 'Mozart Museum' (situated in the house where Wolfgang Amadeus' mother was born) together with several other museums of local interest. In the evenings, the village brass band plays regular concerts in the picturesque village lakeside gardens during July and August.

The marriage of Mozart's grandparents took place in the St Gilgen parish church of St. Aegidius and his mother, Anna Maria Walburga Pertl, was christened there on the same day she was born (25 December 1720). Mozart's sister Nannerl married Johann Baptist Berchtold zu Sonnenburg there on 23 August 1784, and Mozart's grandfather and his brother-in-law are buried there.

The village is the perfect base for walkers & hikers. All local trails are extremely well marked & most feature picturesque cafes (so you are never too far from the next “kaffe & kuchen”!) Walking maps are available locally & are easy to follow.

For some of the most stunning views in the whole of the Salzkammergut region, take the cable-car to the top of the Zwölferhorn Mountain, from where a number of walks are possible. Alternatively, take the cog railway to the top of the Schafberg Mountain & admire the unrivalled 360 degree panorama of the whole region.

Winter sports enthusiasts will not be disappointed in St Gilgen. The Zwolferhorn Mountain offers challenging slopes for experiences skiers, whilst families can enjoy the nursery slopes located just minutes from the apartment.
