Getting here

St Gilgen is ideally placed 28km from Salzburg & just a few kilometres from the motorway junction at Thalgau. It can be reached by a variety of methods:-

Air

The nearest airport is Salzburg (just 25 minutes from St Gilgen), but Munich (1 hour 45 minutes) & Linz (75 minutes) are also convenient to use & situated on major motorways. Ryanair, Flybe, Thompsonfly all operate low cost flights to Austria year round, with several other operators flying during the winter season. It is also worth checking British Airways & Austrian Airlines, who both fly to Salzburg & can offer reasonably priced fares.

Driving

Driving to St Gilgen can seem a little daunting, but in reality is simple & straightforward. The journey takes approximately 10 hours from Dunkirk ferry port & is via excellent toll-free French, Belgian, Dutch & German motorways. Traffic is generally lighter & driving standards somewhat better than you may be used to in the UK! It is advisable to stop overnight en-route & there are many popular tourist sights just off the motorway which can break up the journey.

With some very attractive ferry fares on offer (combined with significantly cheaper European fuel prices), this option can be very economical for families or those with a lot of baggage or sports equipment.
