Herrenchiemsee   Herrenchiemsee

In 1873, King Ludwig 11 bought the island of Herrenchiemsee with the intention of building a replica of the Palace of Versaille here. Funds ran out before it could be fully completed, but what remains is truly breathtaking. Reached by boat from the small town of Stock, you can either walk of take a horse & carriage to the palace itself.

Fraueninsel   Fraueninsel

Take another boat to the neighbouring island of Fraueninsel. It’s abbey was founded in 766 & taken over by Benedictine nuns in the 9th century. It is possible to walk around the perimeter of the island & explore the many food & craft shops.
